Fat burning in the body is called Lipolysis. When body loses fat, the stored fat, triaglycerol is liberated from the fat cell through an enzymatic pathway. When the cell is stimulated, the fat cell releases the triaglycerol into the blood stream as free fatty acids (FFAs). These free fatty acids are then transported through the blood to the tissues  that needed energy.

By lipolysis, each molecule of triaglycerol splits into glycerol and three fatty acids. The reaction is characterized by hormone sensitive lipase(HSL). The stored fat gets released into the blood stream as FFA’s and they are shuttled off to the muscles that energy is needed. As more blood  flows increases to the active muscles, more FFAs are delivered to the muscles that need them. FFAs get inside the mitochondria by lipolysis. It is in the mitochondria that the FFAs get burnt.

This is what happens when the FFAs are released from the fat cells. The Free fatty acids shrinks making the cells have a leaner look. Some scientists concluded that the body do no actually lose fat but rather empty the fat cells. Our body fat is more like a reservoir of energy. And fat cells are like storage tanks. So fat cells can either expand or shrink based on the body needs. 

Finally, too much adipose tissue leads to obesity. This is because most of the excess weight is accumulated fats. The accumulated fats mainly visceral fat. And obesity leads to various health complications(El-Zayat et al, 2019).
